Roxby Downs BMX Pump Track / 2022

LANDSCAPE DESIGN

The Roxby Downs BMX Pump Track provides a new amenity for the children and families of this purpose-built South Australian mining town. The demographic is dominated by young families and has the highest state birth rate. The planting design uses species suggested by the Roxby Downs Horticultural Plan, one that celebrates the local arid ecologies in creating a species-rich collection of flourishing arid-zone plants. Proposed mounds, mimicking the local landforms will create topographic interest and some wind protection on the existing flat site.

The design includes large trees that will ultimately provide shade and smaller groves of trees to provide strong spatial effects. Understory plantings include feature grasslands, a field of paper daisy wildflowers, flowering shrubs and a grey-leafed garden to create special interest areas.

Grass has not been included to avoid the need for irrigated turf. Plants will need watering (using recycled water) for the first year but in the longer term, the plantings will be largely self-sufficient in water for all but the hottest periods.
